Howard Ratner owns a small jewelry store in New York. He's a big NBA fan and has a gambling addiction, that's why he's always in debt. One day a Boston Celtics basketball player Kevin Garnett comes to his store and at the exact time Ratner receives the package with the Ethiopian uncut black opals. They enchant Garnett and he asks to take him for several days, giving his championship ring instead. Howard immediately pawns the ring and makes a bet on Celtics.
